How to Tell Real Pearls From Fake: A Buyer's Guide From Hyderabad's Oldest Pearl House
Buying pearls without knowing what to look for is a little like buying a diamond by its sparkle alone — you might get lucky or you might get sold a story. We've been grading pearls since 1905. Here's what we actually check, and what you can check too.
The Tooth Test
Run the pearl gently across your front teeth. Real pearls feel slightly gritty, almost like fine sand — that's the layered nacre structure. Imitation pearls, made of glass or plastic with a pearlescent coating, feel perfectly smooth.
The Weight Test
Hold it in your palm. Real pearls have a density that imitation beads don't — nacre has mass, hollow glass doesn't. Side by side, the difference is noticeable within seconds.
Look for Imperfection, Not Perfection
- Real pearls have subtle surface variation — tiny ridges, minor irregularities, visible under close light
- Imitation pearls are unnervingly uniform, identical from every angle
- Overtones — real pearls throw secondary colors (rose, silver, green) depending on the light source; fakes hold one flat tone throughout
Ask About Origin, Not Just Appearance
A pearl can pass every visual test and still be misrepresented — treated, dyed, or sold under the wrong classification. This is where visual checks stop being enough and certification starts to matter.
- Freshwater vs. saltwater — different origin, different nacre thickness, different price point; a reputable seller will tell you which you're buying, unprompted
- Natural vs. treated color — dyeing is common in the market and not always disclosed
- Certification — a real certificate names the pearl type and any treatment. If a seller can't produce one, ask why
Why This Guide Exists
We could keep this knowledge behind our counter and let uncertainty work in our favor. We've chosen the opposite, for five generations running. A customer who knows what they're buying trusts the seller who taught them — and that's worth more to us than one uninformed sale.
